Scott McTominay looks set to depart Manchester United, the club he has been at since he was just eight years of age.

The Scottish midfielder has been linked with a move to West Ham United with a bid made for the midfielder according to theBBC, withErik ten Hag’sside demanding around £40 million for the 26-year-old academy graduate.

McTominayhas had a rather bizarre time at Old Trafford. He was bɾօυɢҺt in under Jose Mourinho and handed a very last-minute award by the Portuguese. He was then paired with Brazilian midfielderFred, and from then on, the moniker McFred was born.

The pair then became almost intrinsically linked with each other asOle Gunnar Solskjaerpreferred the two, with Paul Pogba featuring on the left-hand side.

What will be the Scotsman’s legacy

There is a famous photo of McTominay with Sir Alex Ferguson when the midfielder was just a boy signing forUnitedand the midfielder that he can offer something for United, despite there being doubts about his qualities.

After playing as a centre-forward in the academy, Mourinho stuck him in the pivot. A game against Sevilla stuck out for McTominay’s development, he was superb, and Mourinho was full of praise for the midfielder.

What his legacy will be is a hard one to answer. He can be a superb weapon against the big sides, similar to Fred, but there are times when the midfielder looks dangerously out of his depth.

One thing you can’t fault the midfielder for is his application. One ɾєɑȿօɴ why the 26-year-old has been so popular under Mourinho and Solskjaer is his willingness to put in the hard yards for the team, a real workhorse midfielder.

The question has become whether United need more technical assurance in the midfield, which, truth be told, McTominay does not have.

Are United right to sell

West Ham are seemingly the most interested side in the midfielder as things stand. It’s easy to see why, having lost Declan Rice to Arsenal for £105 million, West Ham are looking for midfield depth. Moyes’ side have been linked with James Ward-Prowse, Conor Gallagher and Mctominay.

The Scottish midfielder may well be the perfect option for the Hammers.

For United, this would represent great business. Potentially £40 million for the midfielder, who isn’t a first-choice for Erik ten Hag, would be a great bit of business. McTominay would be a pure profit on United’s accounts, this is due to the midfielder being an academy product.

United could then use the money raised by the Scotsman forSofyan Amrabat, or Romeo Lavia, who is a target for United, according toThe Times.
