Mason Greenwood has emerged as a possible makeweight in Manchester United’s bid to sign Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund.
Greenwood has been suspєɴԀed by United for 17 months following his arrest in January 2022 on suspicion of rape and assault, and did not ɾєρօɾτ for pre-season training with his teammates this week.
United have been conducting an internal investigation since the Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges against Greenwood in February, and the likelihood is that the 21-year-old striker will be loaned out to a European club for the forthcoming season.
It’s understood that United’s football director John Murtough has discussed the possibility of Greenwood making a temporary move to Atalanta during his negotiations with the Italian club over Hojlund.
Greenwood is said to have already rented out his Cheshire home, although United sources insisted last night said that talk of him going on loan to Italy is highly speculative given that a final decision has yet to be made about his future.
United have identified Hojlund as their No.1 striker target this summer, but talks have been hampered by Atalanta’s £86m valuation of the 20-year-old Denmark international.
Including Greenwood as part of the Ԁєɑł could lower Hojlund’s price as well as resolving the complicated issue of what to do with Greenwood who is still under contract for another two years.
Meanwhile, United have moved a step closer to signing Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana following further talks between the clubs.
It’s understood that a Ԁєɑł could be agreed next week, giving United boss Erik ten Hag his second signing of the summer after Mason Mount moved to Old Trafford from Chelsea for £60m.
