Ilkay Gundogan has become the top target for FCBarcelonathis summer following the snub from Lionel Messi, who signed for Inter Miami. The Manchester City captain is a sought-after figure in the market as he will become a free agent from July 1.
Barcelona are very much keen on landing the 32-year-old midfielderfor a multitude of ɾєɑȿօɴs. The Catalans have even sent a three-year contract offer to the German international and wereconfident about their chances of signing him upthis summer.
But, as per the latest ɾєρօɾτ from journalistAchraf Ben Ayad,Barcelonaare fearing that Manchester City’s chances of handing a renewal to Gundogan may be improving, especially after their historic treble triumph.
Man City completed the treble this past weekєɴԀ after beating Inter Milan in the finals of the UEFA Champions League, adding to their Premier League and FA Cup triumphs from earlier in the campaign.
And, Gundogan essayed an important role in each of the three trophies for Pep Guardiola’s side, finishing the campaign with 11 goals and seven assists from 51 appearances across all competitions.
Guardiola, for his part, is urging Manchester Cityto put more efforts to renew Gundogan’s contract. The Premier League champions had initially offered just a one-year contract to their captain, although they have since added an option for a further twelve-month extension.
Meanwhile, Gundogan is also courting interest from Arsenal and clubs in Saudi Arabia. But that is not what worriesBarcelona.
The La Liga champions fear that Gundogan might decide to renew his contract with Manchester City after leading them to a historic treble.
It would not come as a surprise to see the midfielder decide to prolong his stay at the Etihad to enjoy his status as a treble-winner. So, Barça’s concerns are not entirely unfounded at this point.
A decision from the former Borussia Dortmund ace is expected this week and it remains to be seen if he jumps ship and joinsBarcelonaor continues his journey in Manchester.
