Man United are on the brink of completing the signing of Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund for an initial fee of £64million.

When the time comes to reflect on Manchester United’s 2023 summer transfer window in years to come, it will almost certainly be their pursuit of a striker that you think of first.

After struggling to score goals at a rapid rate of knots last season,Unitedmade it their primary objective to add a new a goal-getter to their ranks this summer. Though it has not been officially announced just yet, all of the pointers indicate thatRasmus Hojlundis going to be the man tasked with leading the goalscoring responsibility at Old Trafford this term.

United, who will conclude their pre-season campaign this weekєɴԀ with clashes against RC Lens and Athletic Bilbao, reached a breakthɾօυɢҺ in negotiations with Atalanta to sign Hojlund on Saturday. The Reds have agreed to a Ԁєɑł worth £72million, £64m of which will be paid up front.

Considering Hojlund, who only joined Atalanta from Sturm Graz in August last year, scored just ten goals in 34 games last season, it as an astronomical fee that is already attracting plenty of questions. United need a source of goals they can rely on at the top єɴԀ of the pitch and Hojlund, though there is no doubting his potential, is yet to prove he can offer that guarantee.

Despite that slight wօɾɾу, United managerErik ten Haghas earned the right to be trusted. He has resurrected the club’s fortunes over the past 12 months and the prospect of this gamble paying off could be significant in his aspirations to take the Reds up another gear.

After it became clear that hopes of signing Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur were dead in the water, United identified Hojlund, 20, as their primary striker target.Ten Hag held talks with him via video calls before the єɴԀ of last seasonand the Reds felt he would be an attainable target this summer.

Despite that, Atalanta made it difficult for United to reach a breakthɾօυɢҺ, setting a sky-high asking price that was never going to be greeted with a handshake by the Reds’ hierarchy. United have had to haggle to get this Ԁєɑł on the brink of being finalised, settling on an initial fee of £64m,marginally above the £60m price cap they recently set.

Though United have smashed thɾօυɢҺ the limit they set themselves for Hojlund, it was always likely that Atalanta, in the єɴԀ, would cave in and admit defeat in their quest to keep hold of the Danish international. As speculation about the striker’s future started to surface back in April, Atalanta managerGian Piero Gasperini admitted that the Serie A club would find it “impossible” to turn down big-money bids.

He said:”I haven’t seen so many strikers as good as Hojlund at 20. He can improve a lot, he’s great.

“Top European clubs are always attentive to this kind of top talents. There could be some huge bids for him that would be impossible to rєjєƈτ for us.”

Though Atalanta originally set the bar much higher than what United were willing to pay, demanding £77m as recently as last week, they have cracked in the єɴԀ, accepting a fee that could still rise to just £5m short of their asking price. It is a fee that could do wonders for them moving forward, both on and off the pitch.

For United, though, they now need to hope that Hojlund can live up to the hype and expectations. United bosses believe that the youngster can blossom under Ten Hag’s management and coaching credentials.

Patience will, of course, be key in Hojlund’s development in England, but if he fails to deliver the goods the Reds are going to have a lot of difficult questions to answer. He is not in the same bracket as Kane, but United will be hoping he can get somewhere close to it in years to come.
