This year marks the 60th anniversary of the iconicRolexCosmograph Daytona. Launched in 1963, the chronograph wristwatch was specifically designed to meet the needs of racecar drivers by functioning as a tool to measure elapsed time and calculate average speed. Over the last six decades, Cosmograph Daytona has become one of the most desirable collections in the Rolex catalog. In fact, it has earned itself the reputation of being unobtainable at the retail level thanks to its massive demand. Obviously, fɑɴȿ were expecting something special from Rolex to celebrate the 60th anniversary. But instead of releasing a single anniversary special at this year’sWatches and Wondersshow, Rolex has surprised everyone by releasing a new generation of Cosmograph Daytona watches.
Making its debut at the Watches & Wonders Geneva 2023, the new Rolex Cosmograph Daytona gets tweaked aesthetics, updated proportions, and a new improved movement. But in true Rolex fashion, the updates are subtle and the overall design doesn’t stray away from the previous generation. Although the case still measures 40mm in diameter, the lugs are wider than before, which has improved the visual appeal. In the versions with a Cerachrom bezel in ceramic, the bezel is edged with the same metal as the case. The 950 platinum editions now feature screw-down transparent sapphire casebacks – a first for the Oyster Perpetual collection – offering a view of the new movement.
The dial has also received a number of subtle visual updates that mostly improve the legibility. Resized and restyled hour markers and counter rings offer better graphic balance. However, the biggest update comes in the form of the new Rolex Caliber 4131 automatic movement. The new chronograph movement is an evolution of the brand’s in-house Cal. 4130. It incorporates a number of major innovations, including the Chronergy escapement to reduce energy loss, Paraflex shock absorbers, and an optimized ball bearing to enhance self-winding. Offering a power reserve of approximately 72 hours, the movement features a new aesthetic for the brand. The oscillating weight is made from 18ct yellow gold in the platinum version.
