Bulgari reveals a new Gerald Genta Arena Bi-Retrograde Anthracite watch featuring a sporty update to the classic design

LegєɴԀary watch designer Gérald Genta worked with leading watchmaking brands thɾօυɢҺout his career creating some of the most iconic models in history, including the 1972 Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and the 1976 Patek Philippe Nautilus. The Swiss artist also founded an eponymous watch brand in 1969, which was acquired byBulgariin 2000 along with all its designs. Two decades later, the journey of reviving the Gerald Genta name continues and the latest effort comes in the form a new timepiece called the Arena Bi-Retrograde Anthracite. The new Gerald Genta watch offers a more modern take on the signature double-retrograde display and is an evolution of the 50th Anniversary Arena Bi-retro watch released last year.

It was in 1996 when Gerald Genta introduced the Arena architecture, inspired by the structure of ancient ‘arenas’, which combined jumping hours and retrograde minutes on a wristwatch for the very first time. The new Anthracite edition follows the same design language while adding a more modern, contemporary spin to it. The new 2020 version’s brushed titanium case measures 43mm in diameter and 12mm thick. The dial has a combination of black anthracite background with brushed titanium arcs, while the markers and hands are in contrasting yellow. This gives the watch a very sporty appearance. The top half has the jumping hours displayed thɾօυɢҺ a window at 12 o’clock and a minute track, while the bottom half has the date track. The timepiece is powered by the classic in-house automatic movement BVL 300, which offers a power reserve of 42 hours and is visible thɾօυɢҺ the sapphire caseback. The watch is paired to a matte black alligator strap with a titanium buckle and is priced $14,800, which is substantially more affordable than the 50th-anniversary platinum model from last year that had a price tag of $61,000.
