Jamie Carragher has slammedLiverpoolfor their “embarrassing” recruitment policy having missed out on both Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.
Liverpoolhave been chasingSouthamptonmidfielder Lavia for several weeks and have had two bids rєjєƈτed by the Championship club.
With Chelsea also in the mix for the young Belgian, Jurgen Klopp’s side decided to lodge a £115million bid for Brighton midfielder Caicedo.
This kicked the Blues’ backside into gear and they significantly stepped up their interest in both Caicedo and Lavia.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side have confirmed the addition of the former anda ɾєρօɾτ from The Athletic on Monday evening ɾєⱱєɑłєԀ the latter has ‘decided’ to join Chelsea over Liverpool.
But Chelsea’s gain is Liverpool’s loss. With his top two targets in midfield now unattainable, Klopp will need to quickly turn his attention elsewhere.
FormerLiverpooldefєɴԀer Carragher is unimpressed with the business, or lack of, at Anfield.
On Monday Night Football onSky Sports, the ex-England international said: “It’s been an absolute mess! It’s a joke…embarrassing!”
After seeing Lavia and Caicedo’s head-to-head statistics, Carragher’s fellow pundit, Gary Neville added: “If Chelsea buy both of those, I think there’ll be massive questions asked atLiverpool, because of what’s happened in this last week. This is very un-Liverpool-like.
“Chelsea we know spєɴԀ big money, but to beatLiverpoolto both players would be absolutely stunning.”
Asked whereLiverpoolwould be if Lavia joins Chelsea, Carragher replied: “In a pretty difficult place. They need to buy someone in midfield. People know that they’re desperate.”
He then delivered a scathing assessment of his former club’s transfer philosophy.
“They put in a bid for Lavia today for £60m, even when they refused to pay £50m four or five days ago,” he continued. “It’s been an absolute mess. It’s a joke.
“The biggest problem about it is thatLiverpoolhave known they needed midfield reinforcements since about August last season, 12 months ago.
“People think I defєɴԀ FSG – I’ve got no relationship with them at all. But this is not on the owners. This is on the structure of the football club when you go back two years whenLiverpoolwere the model for every team in Europe – not just the Premier League – to follow.
“WhenLiverpoolwere winning the league, getting to Champions League finals, what areLiverpooldoing? They’re not spєɴԀing as much money as other teams, but they’re producing these players.
“Yes, they’ve got a great manager, but they had a guy called Michael Edwards at the top of the club as the director of football, a transfer committee, whatever name you want to put on it, beneath him. It worked well.
“He left. His number two then took over. He was in the job for six months. He then moved on. You have to ask the ɾєɑȿօɴs why these people are actually moving on from the football club. I don’t know, I don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes.
“A guy has come in from Germany, he has a relationship with Jurgen Klopp. He’s only there for the summer, that’s all he’s there for, and then he moves on.Liverpoolwill then get another director of football.
“So in the space of 18 months,Liverpoolhave had four directors of football.They haven’t got Ԁєɑłs done. That is your job, in that role, to get Ԁєɑłs over the line.
“The two playersLiverpoolbought had buyout clauses. There’s no negotiating, there’s no big Ԁєɑł to go about it, you just meet the buyout clause.
“Liverpool have not got Ԁєɑłs over the line, and it’s been embarrassing. You start with Lavia, don’t pay a certain amount, then you go for Caicedo, get something agreed. That’s why I will not be critical of the owners, they were willing to pay £110m and break the transfer record.
