Martinez was booked for a crunching challenge on Bellingham in United’s feisty 2-0 defeat toReal Madridin Houston’s NRG Stadium. But Bellingham, who joined Real from Borussia Dortmund this summer for £88.5million, potentially rising to £115m, said he and Martinez made up after the final whistle and put their differences to one side.

“The little tiff with Martinez is one of those things,” said Bellingham. “He’s a brilliant player. I came in at half-time and I was ‘f’ing this and f’ing that’.

“But when he came over to wish me all the best when he came off, I really respected it. I know what goes on the pitch stays on the pitch. I saw him at the єɴԀ of the game and wished him well.

“I can respect that when two players are trying to win for their team and can come together and be respectful after the game. He’s a great competitor and a great player. Just like me, he wants to win.

“Sometimes it spills over. That is part of the game. But I’m really respectful. We can have that moment after the game.”

Bellingham, 20, outlined his ambitions at Real after finding the back of the net for the first time since joining Real.

“I’m just trying to add quality to the team by playing my part and try to keep enjoying, winning and playing well,” said Bellingham. “I’ve not seen the goal back yet. It did feel as though I went a little bit early.

“These days you have to play to the whistle because you never know. As I was running over, I saw the linesman and his flag stayed down, so I just carried on with the celebration. If it is offside, so be it, but it’s still a goal.”

Asked about learning Spanish, Bellingham said: “It’s tough. I’m trying, I’m slowly getting better and I have a lot of good teachers in the team. Hopefully that will come.

“I look like I am enjoying it [playing for Real], I like to think. So far, so good. I’m enjoying playing with this team, learning from so many great players.

“I’m definitely not getting carried away just yet. There are big challenges to come this season.

“I was confident coming here, because I knew how good the players were. I know the qualities I can bring and I feel like I have slotted in.

“The role I’m playing is enjoyable. I had a decent game against AC Milan and a decent one today. I just want to keep up the rhythm going into the season.

“There is a lot to aim for and rightly so. It is the biggest club with the best players. The expectations are high, as they should be. It’s about us going out there and matching that.”

Asked to name the best thing about joining Real, Bellingham said: “I can’t say the weather, can I?

“Everything, really. The standards that are set and the way everyone applies themselves in training, the mentality day in day out. I enjoy that.”
