Romano: Chelsea star gives ‘green light’ to Arsenal transfer but ‘no chance’ Edu pays asking price

Kai Havertz wants to join Arsenal this summer but the Gunners will not pay Chelsea’s asking price for the forward, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Like many Chelsea players, the Germany international has not enjoyed the best campaign at Stamford Bridge with nine goals in all competitions as the Blues struggled to score goals, finishing 12th in the Premier League table.

Havertz has scored 32 goals in 139 appearances for Chelsea after joining from Bayer Leverkusen in a Ԁєɑł worth around £71m and will always be fondly remembered by Blues fɑɴȿ for his winning goal in the 2021 Champions League final.

ɾєρօɾτs have emerged in recent daysclaiming that Premier League runners-up Arsenal want to sign Havertz this summer with the Gunners holding talks with Chelsea and the 24-year-old’s representatives.

And now transfer expert Romano claims Havertz wants the move to London rivals Arsenal with Real Madrid “out of the race” and Bayern Munich “still quiet” but he doubts Gunners technical director Edu will pay Chelsea’s asking price.

Romano wrote onTwitter: “Understand Kai Havertz has given green light to Arsenal contract bid after positive indications #AFC No problem on personal terms. Arsenal & Chelsea in contact — no chance for £75m but Chelsea will be flexible. Bayern, informed… but still quiet. Real 100% out of the race.”

And Ally McCoist thinks Havertz’s playing style would suit Arsenal and Mikel Arteta will be able to benefit from his ability to play in multiple positions.

McCoist said ontalkSPORT: “I’m having him. I’m telling you right now he’s been playing out of position, without a doubt, never a centre-forward.

“I specifically watched him in a couple of games I went to and he just keeps coming towards the ball, whereas a centre-forward nine times out of 10 disappears from the ball. But I think he’s a top player, I really think he’s a top player as a number 10 or a midfielder.”

McCoist added:”He’s no way an out-and-out centre-forward for me. It does not surprise me that the clubs you’ve mentioned are in for him. He’s more forward-thinking; he’s a number 10 effectively. He takes the ball on the half-turn, [and] always makes himself available.

“There’s goals in him but not enough to be an out-and-out centre-forward. I like him, I really do.”

Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Shaka Hislop is baffled by Arsenal’s interest in Havertz with the German doing “nothing in three years at Chelsea”.

When asked if he was surprised that Arsenal are interested in Havertz, Hislop told ESPN: “I am. I’m just not sure where Kai Havertz fits in this Arsenal. He’s done nothing in three years at Chelsea to suggest that he’s going to be worth that kind of money, that he’s going to discover the form we saw at Leverkusen.

“And then you look at Arsenal’s attacking lineup, and again, I’m just not sure who he takes the place of. Or is he coming in as a squad player? It just doesn’t make an awful lot of sense to me at all. Nothing about this makes sense for me.”
