Arsenal ‘pull plug’ on transfer and Arteta eyes relegated defєɴԀer as ‘cheaper alternative’ to City man

Arsenal have ɾєρօɾτedly ‘cooled their interest’ in Real Valladolid’s Ivan Fresneda but they are looking to sign Joao Cancelo or Timothy Castagne.

Mikel Arteta converted Ben White into a right-back last summer and the Englishman shone in this new position during the 2022/23 campaign.

But last month, it was ɾєρօɾτed that theSpanish head coach is hoping to move White back to centre-back next seasonand he will sign a new full-back to slot in on the right.

Fresneda has been consistently linked with Arsenal over the past year following his emergence for Real Valladolid in La Liga but he is also being pursued by Borussia Dortmund.

Football Insiderare claiming that the Gunners have now acted to ‘pull the plug’ on their move for the 18-year-old as they are ‘targeting a more experienced right-back’.

Arsenalare said to have ‘strong interest’ in Man City’s Cancelo, while they are ‘keeping close tabs on’ Leicester City’s Castagne, who is viewed as a ‘cheaper alternative’.

Over the weekєɴԀ, it was ɾєρօɾτed that Cancelo has been told that his ‘Man City career is over’ after his ɾєρօɾτed fall-out with Pep Guardiola.

The Portugal international was sent out on loan to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in January.Football Insiderare ɾєρօɾτing that they ‘will not activate the buy option they negotiated as part of the Ԁєɑł to bring him in on loan’.

Arsenal are ‘admirers’ of the Man City outcast butCastagne has emerged as a potential alternative target. While Cancelo could cost around £60m, the Leicester man would cost much less than that following his side’s relegation from the Premier League.

Sky Sports ɾєρօɾτerDharmesh Sheth thinks there is currently a “gap in valuation” between Arsenal and Man City for Cancelo.

“Arsenal also in the market to strengthen in defence and at full-back. It’s another Man City player they are interested in – Joao Cancelo,” Sheth told Sky Sports.

“Bayern Munich didn’t take up the option to buy him on a permanent basis. He’s still got two years left on his contract [with Man City] so he won’t come cheap.

“The early suggestions are is that there is a gap in valuation in early verbal talks between the two clubs about what Man City would want and what Arsenal would be prepared to offer.”
